    Description

You are bidding on an original copy of the
    1938 International Live Stock Exhibition
    Official Catalog
that was once owned by Don Ornduff, who attended the Exposition as a writer for the
    American
    Hereford Journal
. (His signature appears on the front cover.)
    An annual event,
    Chicago’s
    International Live Stock Exposition
was the largest such show in the world.
Competing for valuable cash prizes were cattle, sheep, swine, and draft horses that had previously won top honors at state and regional fairs. In addition to the livestock judging contests, there was an evening horse show, agricultural displays, and farm-related educational exhibits.
In 1938, the Exposition took place from November 26
    th
    to December 3
    rd
    .
    It was held in Chicago’s
    International Amphitheater
    located next to the
    Union Stock Yard
    .
This copy contains Don Ornduff’s hand-written notes regarding the judging events involving Hereford cattle.
At page 189, for example, these notes refer to 17-year-old Ralph Hess, Jr. of Verden, Oklahoma and his steer
    Davie Hazford
which had been the breed champion among the Hereford steers in the junior show.
According to Ornduff’s notes, Ralph’s family was in the cattle business.
Earlier, two of Ralph’s steers, which had the same sire as
    Davie
    Hazford
, had been reserve grand champions in Oklahoma City.
    Also, on page 189 is
    what might be
the autograph of Irene Brown, the 14-year-old 4-H girl from Aledo, Illinois whose Angus steer
    Mercer
    was the 1938 Grand Champion.
Donald R. Ornduff (1907-1998) later served as editor of the
    American Hereford Journal
    .
    In 1957 he wrote
The Hereford in America; a compilation of historic facts about the breed’s background and bloodlines
    which he published privately.
This copy comes from a non-smoking household.
It is clean, has tight binding, and is in very good condition.
