First offered as the DB2, Aston Martin quickly realized that it was becoming more important to accommodate the needs of motoring enthusiasts. The DB2/4 Saloon emerged with two rear jump seats, more rear luggage space and the distinctive rear "hatch". All this, including chassis upgrades, made the new model DB2/4 Saloon capable of carrying more comfortably at high speeds. The Motor magazine boasted "The DB2/4 can truthfully claim to be the fastest car in the world capable of carrying two people with a month's luggage". The evolved 2.9-litre 140bhp 'VB6J' engine was capable of achieving 100mph in third gear with around 120mph top speed. Of course, all this came with fantastic handling and bespoke interior trimmed in fine leather and burled walnut.
According to factory records and British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, AM300/1114, a home market Mk II variant - of which just 199 produced, was built on May 28, 1956 and delivered new via Tice & Son Ltd., May 30, 1956 finished in Dark Grey over Green Connolly leather, with engine number VB6J/656. The original owner W.I. Madge-Forman of Branksome Park / Dorset, England is recorded on an accompanying copy of the original Aston Martin build sheet. Supporting the build sheet are service work ledgers from September 1956 to March 1958 at 26,848 recorded miles. Notable work performed in 1958 included an upgraded large valve cylinder head, specially prepared induction manifolds, and chrome twin exhaust system fitted. Additional owners noted on the build sheet include Alan G. Lampert / Kin Lawrence USA, which is likely how the vehicle made its way to the States early on. A vintage Orange County Auto Club water transfer decal remains adhered to the rear hatch glass.
Today this fantastic Aston Martin presents well and offers the ideal vintage touring candidate eligible for numerous prestigious driving events around the world. Beautifully mellowed cosmetics show nicely for local display, finished in a rich blue-over-tan combination, with the well-fitted and properly maintained leather upholstery facing a rich burled dashboard with crisp, clear, and Smiths instrumentation. All lights, gauges and electrical equipment are in proper working order. The rear hatch is easily opened, revealing ample luggage space.
Under the bonnet is clean and correct, without being over-restored, while the chassis appears equally tidy. The body trim is in good condition, including the chrome hardware and the wire wheels, which feature a distinctive combination of chrome spokes and blue rims surrounded by blackwall Avon Turbospeed tires. Notable lighting equipment include Raydyot fog lamps and Lucas "blue dot" headlights. Both the original chassis stamping and the original brass tag with chassis and engine numbers are still present, while the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate in Aston Martin binder confirms the MK II's original engine VB6J/656, as fitted.
A notable Summer 2020 mechanical inspection and service included a professional stem clean/chemical-pressure flush and test of the radiator, professional fuel tank restoration, new thermostat and housing, brake fluid reservoir, headlight switch, new ignition components, and a general tune-up with accompanying invoice.
    Engine Compression:
    160, 170, 170, 160, 170, 155 psi
Considering the outstanding qualities of this car and the growing appreciation for early David Brown Aston Martins, this wonderfully presented DB2/4 Mk II Saloon presents an excellent opportunity as an ideal entrant for prestigious driving events such as the Mille Miglia, California Mille and the Colorado Grand. Ready for touring, local show display, and/or AMOC gatherings, 11114 offers many possibilities for its next caretaker.
