2009 Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Red Aluminum Doubloon

Description

Here's the 2009 Strawberry Festival Red Aluminum Doubloon. The obverse features an Outline of Louisiana with a Strawberry marking the location of Ponchatoula and reads "Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival...Since 1971," as shown in the feature photo. The reverse features a Tipped-Over Pint of Strawberries and reads "Strawberry Festival...Ponchatoula, LA...April 3- 5, 2009," as shown in the second photo. The doubloon is in excellent condition. Note: Ponchatoula is known as the Strawberry Capital of Louisiana. The slightly acidic soils and moderate temperatures make the area ideal for growing strawberries. Each year since 1971, Ponchatoula holds its annual Strawberry Festival, which has become one of the most popular festivals in Louisiana. The festival is usually held on the second weekend in April, unless that date conflicts with Easter, as it did in 2009, and was held during the first weekend of April. Each year a King, Queen and Royal Court are elected and reign over the annual Ball, Parade and Festival and serve as representatives of the Strawberry Festival for a year. It is during the Strawberry Festival Parade that the doubloons are thrown to eager parade spectators. Ponchatoula is a small town but during the Strawberry Festival weekend its population grows to around 350,000 or more. Our town is so small that there is a sign in the local bar which reads "Our town is so small we can't afford a town drunk, so we all take turns."
