Antique Georgian Child's Silk Fingerless Mittens - RARE

Description

The most darling and delicate little girl's gloves you'll ever see. They are a sheer woven silk and on top is what I would call stump-work - a corded, heavy embroidery that sits up on top of the main material. They are either French or English, which is mostly what I have collected.
They are cream colored, with a few minimal areas of discoloration. There are a few wear spots, holes. As you may know, silk comes from a certain type worm. There are oils in silk and over time - depending on how the piece is stored - those oils dry out. It's very important to store antique silk pieces in a smoke-free environment, away from direct sunlight, in an air- conditioned environment- which I have done since they have been in my care (Feb 2014). I have them lightly stuffed with acid-free tissue paper.
I estimate these gloves to fit a child of between 2 and 4 years of age. I tried to depict scale in a picture with my own hand. They are approximately 4 and 5/8" long.
