Notable Features:
Handmade during the Victorian era in the Dominican Republic, likely a piece purchased as a souvenir
Composed of copper
Features two dangling medals which read "Cristober Colon des Cubredor de America," which translates to "Christopher Columbus Discoverer of America"
Prior to 1892, many of these souvenir pieces were made in anticipation of the 400th anniversary of Columbus arriving in America, with coins in the style of Georgian Spanish Colonial currency
The medals also read, "Santo Domingo," which is one place where Christopher Columbus is said to be buried
These medals dangle beneath urn-like and squared motifs with hand-hammered floral and geometric designs
Completed with one post backing and one shepherd's crook backing, making them suitable for pierced ears
Damage
: Age appropriate wear. The earring backings do not match, and the post backing requires the addition of a butterfly backing in order to be worn; these backings can be replaced with matching backings by your local jeweler, if desired. The price has been reduced to reflect this.

The History
The Victorian era took place from the year 1836 to the year 1901, which was the span of Queen Victoria’s reign. Queen Victoria’s style was undoubtedly influential on the fashions of her country and ultimately led to three distinct jewelry trends emerging from the era. The first of these three styles was the Romantic period. The Romantic period was impacted by the Georgian period, which preceded it. The second period was the Grand period, which was primarily defined by mourning jewelry and the trends surrounding it. The final period was the Aesthetic period. The Aesthetic period was more lighthearted and airy than the previous periods and focused on aesthetic beauty and joy. This era features floral, natural, and feminine motifs, and utilized chased gold designs, enamel, and seed pearls.
