Description

New old stock, BRITISH STANDARD PIPE thread tap to match the 1/4 inch threaded holes found on some vintage British motorcycle gas tanks notably Triumph and Norton. Cleans rust, gunk from the threads, straightens up the threads before reassembly. Old stock most often manufactured in England, but may on occasion be from USA, or Germany. Made to British Tool Standards, carbon steel.
These were once easy to find, but are getting to be a challenge recently. British Pipe Thread is one of the thread patterns used on British cars, motorcycles, airplanes and other machines from days gone by.

There were several thread patterns used by the British engineers for their motorcycle, car, plane, boat and various other machine industries. The three most popular that we as restorers will be dealing with are: 1. Whitworth, formally known as British Standard Whitworth (BSW), then later as British Standard Coarse. Each diameter had it's own thread per inch count, (TPI) varing by bolt diameter. 2. Cycle thread, short for Cycle Engineering Institute (CEI). Almost all Cycle threads were 26 threads per inch, with a few variant TPI counts where needed. These are often called the "shakeproof" fasteners. 3. British Standard Fine, (BSF) threads. Similar to Whitworth, the number of threads per inch varied with the diameter of the bolt or stud.
