Staffordshire Transferware Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition Souvenir Plate 1909

Description

A large deep blue transferware souvenir plate from the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition in Seattle that took place in 1909.
The ceramic plate was manufactured in Staffordshire England in 1909 for the Seattle Alaska Pacific Exposition. The glaze is thick and very smooth feeling. It has a deep cobalt blue transfer with panels of different points of interest arranged around a central medallion. The panels show Mount Rainier, Princess Angeline, the Alaska Building, Snoqualmie Falls.  The central medallion has a design of a Geisha, a pioneer woman, and a woman with a railroad engine. The border incorporates Roman laurel leaves. The words “ALASKA – YUKON – PACIFIC EXPOSTION” and “SEATTLE 1909” are on a border that encircles the central medallion.
The plate has a shallow rounded foot. The base and foot are glazed.  The base has transfers that read, “THE ROWLAND & MARSELLUS Co STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND DESIGNED & IMPORTED BY SPELGER & HURLBUT SEATTLE, WASH. “ There is also a diamond cartouche with letters R and M.
MEASUREMENTS
10 1/8” (25.7 cm) diameter x 7/8” (2.2 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 4.2 oz (570 g)
CONDITION
A crack extends nearly ½ of the way from the edge of the plate towards the center. On the front, there is a chip along the crack. There is also a smaller chip in the same crack near the rim. The plate also has kiln flaws, such as smudges, blue dots, and bumps. The glaze shows a fine crazing, and there is slight wear to the surface.
A great plate for the collector or for a person that now lives in Seattle and wants a piece of local history.
