Description
In the late 1800s, every American coastal city lived under the threat of a foreign man o' war slipping into its harbor, leveling its guns, and demanding the capitulation of the city. The US Coastal Artillery Corps (CAC) was formed in 1901 to protect American cities, harbors, and military installations from seaborne attack using heavy cannons in well protected emplacements. CAC 1st glass gunners wore a distinctive cannon shell patch on the sleeves of their M-1902 dress blue uniforms to denote their qualification. This US Army Pre-WW1 COAST ARTILLERY CORPS 1ST CLASS GUNNER M-1902 DRESS BLUE PATCH is in very good condition, with some deep moth bites around the middle front, and with some light overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the patch is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough dark blue wool construction. Most interestingly, it bears the classic cannon shell and bar design of a CAC 1st class gunner sewn in red wool at front, measures 2 5/8" in diameter, and is a fine example of an original US Army Pre-WW1 COAST ARTILLERY CORPS 1ST CLASS GUNNER M-1902 DRESS BLUE PATCH.
